Job purpose

The Equipment Assistant supports mechanics in inspecting, maintaining, and repairing vehicles, machinery, or equipment. This role involves performing basic tasks such as changing fluids, replacing parts, cleaning work areas, and handling tools. The ideal candidate should have basic mechanical knowledge, good physical stamina, and the ability to follow instructions.

    • Conduct regular inspections, maintenance, and repairs on company vehicles, including trucks, mowers, snowplows, salt spreaders, and other equipment. 

    • Assist mechanics in diagnosing and repairing equipment.

    • Perform routine maintenance tasks, such as oil changes and filter replacements.

    • Clean and organize the workspace.

    • Handle and transport parts, tools, and supplies as needed.

    • Inspect and test vehicle components under supervision.

    • Maintain records of repairs and parts used.

    • Follow safety protocols and wear protective gear.

    • Assist with assembling and disassembling mechanical components.

    • Must have a valid driver’s license and ability to be added onto the company insurance policy.

    • High school diploma or equivalent (preferred).

    • Basic knowledge of automotive or mechanical systems.

    • Ability to use hand and power tools safely.

    • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow instructions.

    • Physical stamina and ability to lift heavy objects.

    • Willingness to learn and work in a fast-paced environment.

    • Work in garages, repair shops, or outdoor environments.

    • Outdoor work may involve exposure to varying weather conditions, including extreme temperatures, rain, or dust, especially when managing equipment on job sites.

    • The role requires frequent physical activity, including standing, walking, bending, kneeling, and sometimes climbing, especially when inspecting, operating, or maintaining equipment.

    • The environment may include exposure to high noise levels from machinery and equipment, necessitating the use of hearing protection. 

    • The role involves working closely with heavy machinery, tools, and equipment, which requires careful handling and the ability to troubleshoot mechanical issues.

    • Ability to stand, walk, and move around for extended periods, often across uneven terrain or within workshop and storage areas.

    • Frequent bending, kneeling, stooping, and crouching to inspect, maintain, and repair equipment.

    • Ability to lift, carry, and move heavy objects or equipment, often weighing up to 75 pounds or more.

    • Manual dexterity to operate tools, machinery, and other equipment effectively.

    • Strong visual acuity to inspect machinery for wear, damage, or operational issues, sometimes requiring close attention to detail.

    • Physical stamina to work in environments that may include extreme temperatures, noise, or exposure to dust, dirt, grease, or other elements common in maintenance and repair settings.

    • Ability to climb ladders, operate forklifts, or work in confined spaces when handling specific equipment or tasks.

    • Good hearing and communication skills to coordinate with team members in noisy environments or during equipment operation.

    • Flexibility to adapt to varying physical demands based on the specific equipment or project requirements.
